THE ESSENTIAL HOW TO INCORPORATE HAIR MASQUES INTO YOUR HAIR CARE ROUTINE
Are Hair Masques something you forget about in your hair care ritual?
The hair masque mistakes you didn't realise that you were making.
Here at Pello Hairdressing we see masquing as an essential part of your hair care, not just as an add-on service in the salon, but an essential part of your at home weekly hair care routine.
We love using hair masque to address specific hair needs, but if you're new to these treatments you may be wondering where to begin. You may be looking for a remedy for dry hair or for damaged hair .or you may want to address thinning hair or a dry scalp.
So Masque, relax and repair.
Who needs to use a hair masque?
Just like our face our hair is exposed to harsh elements every single day . In this current strange climate where we are missing out on our regular trips to get pampered at the salon it's really important to take a few extra steps to maintain the condition of your hair at home.If like the majority of us if your hair is coloured , if you use a blowdryer or styling tools on a regular basis , if your hair is prone to breakage , if your hair is very dry or if you suffer from an irritated scalp you need to use a hair masque.
How many types of hair masque are there?
There is definitely a lot to choose from but essentially hair masque can be broken down into two categories.
Thoses that you apply to your hair length- essentially for conditioning, repairing and nourishing and those applied to your scalp - usually they target scalp sensitivity, hair growth or oiliness.
Let's see how to incorporate them into your hair care routine.
Your hair may be damaged in the following way.
Split ends happen to the best of hair, and doesn't necessarily just split at the end of your hair as sometimes especially in chemically or heat treated hair it can occur in the middle of the hair shaft. Therefore it's so important to repair and treat this damage before it gets splits even further.
A good hair masque will fill in the gap in the broken hair structure, acting like a temporary glue. This will slow down the breakage but then it need to be repaired and the molecules need to be replenished in order to maintain the bond. This is why it's essential to use hair masques on a regular basis.
Should I wash my hair first?
Oil based masques will work better when applied to dry hair as this enables your hair to soak up all the benefits.
For water based masques Yes , you need to shampoo your hair twice with your favourite shampoo (and that should also be the appropriate one for your hair needs ) Shampooing your hair will open the hair cuticle, which will allow the moisture from the masque to be absorbed and bonds to be rebuilt.Rinse your freshly shampoos hair well with preferably Luke warm water ..not hot water.Gently towel dry and apply to damp hair.Following the instructions massage into your hair length and use a wide toothed comb to evenly distribute it through the hair then and leave the masque on your hair for the recommended time ...usually 5 to 15 minutes. If your hair is not too porous wrap a warm towel loosely around your hair.Rinse thoroughly...and then apply your conditioner as this seals in the goodness at the cuticle.
Can I leave a hair masque overnight?
Depending on the ingredients Yes, you can but it's not always necessary… Maybe for extremely damaged hair but if it's for protein it recommends to only leave on for 5 minutes upward , depending again on the direction of your chosen hair masque this should be adequate time to give it the added moisture that your hair needs.
We would definitely recommend here at Pello Hairdressing to use it more regularly as in twice a week for the RECOMMENDED duration as opposed to once a week for a longer period.
However by now you will know that you shouldn't use a hair masque every day.Like anything if you use it more than you need to it can take a toll on your hair.A hair masque will work over time rather than immediately in one treatment.
How to masque your way to thicker hair.
For masque that have formula for sensitive scalp or for Thickening hair these should be applied directly to the scalp and worked through hair from root to end..these masque will deeply nourish your hair and scalp with a blend of oils. These treatments work for thickening the hair by plumping each individual hair strand , making hair thicker and adding fullness that lasts all day.Again these masque work over a period of time and repeating on a weekly or recommended usage is essential to see results in the long term.
What's the difference between a hair masque and conditioner?
Conditioners will temporarily make hair silky and smooth , but a masque will nourish strands from within...So conditioner serves the cosmetic purpose of making hair look great and feel good. Masques on the other hand are nourishing treatments which provide nutrients and TLC to dry and damaged strands.
Do I need a mask in Winter and Summer?
Yes, you always need to take Seasonal factors into account.During Winter our hair becomes more brittle due to constant changing temperature and physical damage to the strand due to hats .While in the Summer we need to consider the sun damage .
Through the year , we would definitely recommend here at Pello Hairdressing to start using a masque on a regular basis .Invest in a good product that is preferably plant and oil based, cruelty free, and vegan with no silicon.
